Is Indonesia’s Cyber Security Ready to Embrace the All-Digital Era?
Event Press Release 22/12/2016

Is Indonesia’s Cyber Security Ready to Embrace the All-Digital Era?

“Increasing 10% of national internet bandwidth would substantially grow the national GDP by 1.38%“ said Bagus Rachman, Director Business and Marketing of LLP-KUKM, in the opening ceremony of Indonesia Internet Expo and Summit 2016 (IIXS 2016) at Balai Kartini, Jakarta. The burning passion of national ambition to grow internet coverage and usage in Indonesia is what IIXS 2016 all about. IIXS 2016 is held with the purpose of gathering Indonesia’s key stakeholders of Internet Service Provider (ISP) and improving internet infrastructure across the archipelago together. IIXS 2016 was generally available in two parts; exhibition and conference. Both of them were held throughout the scheduled three days from 22 – 24 November 2016. ARIM Technologies CEO & Co-Founder, Mr. Ivan Goh, was invited to be one of the speakers at this prestigious conference. He was joined with panellists from 4 Big-Data organisations; Telkom Indonesia, Teradata, XL Axiata and Smart City DKI. Although the conference has a larger theme around big data and analytics, it was interesting to see that the majority of the panel questions from the audience was meant for Ivan, and centered around Cyber Security. Indonesia’s booming growth in internet usage isn’t supported by the same level of  infrastructure growth Indonesia is believed to be one of the countries with the most number of active social media users – more than 88 million Indonesians are active internet users. With a staggering number of internet data contributors, Indonesia is rich with its “Big Data” eco-system. “With our government partnership, we actively monitor citizens’ GPS data to improve city facilities” says Smart City DKI. With this background in mind, CEO & Co-Founder of ARIM Technologies, Mr. Ivan Goh, took a different perspective of viewing the current Big-Data boom in Indonesia. While  others are hungry to explore and exploit the benefits of this Big-Data boom, ARIM Technologies sees the growing risks and vulnerabilities exposed by this Big-Data layer. The general level of awareness in cyber-threats of Indonesians (consumer and enterprises) are low as compared to other ASEAN nations – reported by the Leader of Indonesia Internet Domain Name Organiser (PANDI). The boom of Big-Data increases the attack-surface for attackers, making sensitive information such as location information, phone numbers, private financial information, etc. easier targets for attackers. Indonesia’s cyber security future at risk “To an attacker, there is no difference between big-data or regular data. All data has its value and level of significance to the attackers” says Ivan Goh. He added that “Most organisations that we work with have had at least 1 ransomware attack in the recent months”. Ransomware is a trending deadly malware that encrypts its victims’ computer disks/files,  and then asks the victim for monetary payments in order to receive the key to decrypt the disks/files. Ransomware continues to evolve with smarter and better features, and have also started targeting the Internet of Things (IoT). Technology continues to evolve at a rapid rate, and so does malwares. Understanding how malware can put one at risk has significant benefits, but is often overlooked, and brushed aside as a trivial matter. Being one of Asia’s most infected country (#2) by malware, Indonesia should really start to take the right steps towards increasing cyber security awareness in embracing the booming all-digital era.   ARIM Technologies is a company which specialises in providing innovative cyber security startups’ solutions onto the Asian market.
